American Airlines Basic Economy tickets generally cannot be changed under standard fare rules, but there are a few exceptions. If you purchased a Basic Economy ticket, your options depend on when you booked, where your trip originates, and whether you are an AAdvantage member.
Change and Cancellation Rules
Standard Rule: No Changes
Basic Economy tickets are generally non-changeable and non-refundable after the initial 24-hour period. This is the main restriction of the fare, although certain exceptions apply.
Exception 1: Within 24 Hours of Booking
You can change or cancel your ticket for a full refund within 24 hours of purchase, provided you booked at least 7 days before departure.
If you booked directly through American Airlines, you can manage your reservation online or through the American Airlines app. If you booked through a travel agency or third-party website, you must contact them directly.
Exception 2: AAdvantage Member Cancellation (After 24 Hours)
AAdvantage members may be able to cancel a Basic Economy ticket and receive travel credit after paying an applicable cancellation fee.
To qualify:
- Your AAdvantage number must be included in the reservation before canceling.
- The trip must be booked in the United States directly through American Airlines.
- The trip must be on an American Airlines-marketed and operated flight starting in one of the 50 U.S. states.
- Cancellation must be completed on aa.com or through the American Airlines app before the first flight departs.
If the cancellation fee exceeds the ticket price, no travel credit will be issued.
Exception 3: Trips Originating in Europe
If your trip originates in Europe, you may be able to change your Basic Economy ticket for a fee. This exception excludes Finland, Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania.
Same-Day Flight Changes and Standby
Basic Economy passengers may qualify for same-day confirmed flight changes on select flights for a fee, subject to availability and applicable restrictions.
Same-day standby is also available for eligible earlier flights at no charge. However, standby does not guarantee a seat on the alternative flight.
Same-day travel options depend on the route and market. For example, American Airlines lists different standby restrictions for travel involving the Caribbean and Canada.
Passengers should check the airline’s official same-day travel policy before making arrangements.

Key Considerations
- Fare Difference Still Applies: When a change is permitted, you may have to pay the difference between your original ticket price and the new flight.
- Booking Source Matters: If you purchased your ticket through a travel agency or third-party booking website, you will generally need to contact that provider for assistance with changes or cancellations.
- Non-AAdvantage Members: Passengers who do not qualify for the AAdvantage Basic Economy cancellation exception generally cannot receive travel credit after the initial 24-hour cancellation period. However, certain circumstances, including qualifying flight disruptions, may entitle passengers to a refund under applicable airline policies and regulations.
Important: American Airlines’ fare rules, fees, and travel restrictions may change. Always check the airline’s official website or contact its reservations department to confirm the conditions that apply to your ticket before making travel arrangements.
